I would like to create a closet organizer. I know things are cheaper if you do-it-yourself but I'm not that handy. Would it be easier to call a company like California Closets? Can anyone suggest ideas? Thx!

It would be pretty easy to call California Closets BUT there are also simple steps [not so much building it] to create an organized closet. It may not look like a top-notch closet but it will look better if your closet is already disorganized.
There are closet organizers that you can buy at Wal-Mart if you look in the laundry section. Although it may be somewhere else for you. Is it just cluttered? Do you have too many outfits? What exactly is your problem?
For clutter I recommend going through your closet and simply throwing out [or donating] outdated or clothes you no longer wear. Sort through the clothes, shoes, and other accessories you plan to keep in piles such a) special occasion, b) business causal/work attire, c) casual clothing, and (d) outdoor/messy clothes [for projects or art work that can get messed up].
Now that you have that all sorted out your closet should be empty. Start arranging clothing that should be on hangers. Put all special occasion clothing into plastic hanging bags so they remain clean. You can organize your clothes by color coordinated hangers. [For example; red: work clothes, blue: casual clothes, white: messy clothes..etc] You can also sort your closet on different level clothing rods. They are simple to install and that you be the only DIY thing you would do. The main idea is to keep clothes you wear often the first thing you see.
The rest would be simple. Put your shoes on a shoe rack [again you can purchase for cheap] according to the setting you would wear them. Put special occasion things in shoe boxes up top if you have an upper shelf. If not, just stack shoe boxes neatly in the far corner of your closet. Buy a metal rack [Ikea $19.99] for all of your accessories/t-shirts. Last but not least get a laundry sorter for your closet and you're all done.
All of this may seem hard but you can do it all in a day for under $50. It may not look like a fancy closet but it will be organized and easy on the eye. Best of luck with whatever you choose to do!
Home Depot has closet organizer sets on sale at 30% off this week. They have sets that are already structured. You don't need much more skill than the ability to use a cordless drill, and you will save a great deal of money.
If you are ok with spending more, Classy Closets does a great job. I had them do my closets and garage and it's great but pretty expensive.
Just slightly off topic, but thought I'd pass it along. Regardless of how you organize, I found a little product that is fantastic for keeping things fresher in the closets that I put on the shelves and also some drawers. I also use them interchangably in some shoes to eliminate odors. The product is an activated carbon filter inside a little purple cube that works really, really well. It is called FRIDGE IT odor absorbers that I buy usually in the kitchen gadgets sections of stores like Walmart and Linen and things. I think probably originally made for fridge odors, it just is great for closets too. I actually use them for diaper pail also which is the toughest test. Anyway, good luck with organizing and give these a try. I've tried other products that just don' work as well and I don't like covering up problems with fragrances.
